Here's how we introduced the series last summer:
night raid This is the story of the tragic death of a Pomona SWAT officer and the man accused of killing him.
Ask public defenders in Los Angeles Criminal Court what the most complex and heartbreaking case of the past decade is and almost all will say The People v. David Martinez. Ask any prosecutor and he or she will admit that the case was tragic. But is it complicated? no. They said it was murder, plain and simple.
There is no disputing that Officer Shaun Diamond was a man of good character who met a horrific death, or that David Martinez belonged to a motorcycle club that came into conflict with law enforcement. But Night Raid avoids hasty judgments and considers all aspects of a very ambiguous case. And along the way, we explore our own biases and preconceptions about cause and effect, guilt and innocence, and even punishment and redemption.
There is no video of the raid and David Martinez is not the ACLU poster boy. He is a vicious family man who may have contributed to the shotgun blast that killed Diamond on the night of October 28, 2014. Over eight episodes of Night Raid, we unravel the compelling story of The People vs. David Martinez. David's two trial events, the reasons for the SWAT raid and the planning behind it, David's relationship with the Mongols Motorcycle Club, and how the intertwined narratives of this story reflect larger problems in our judicial system. The series takes a closer look at Diamond's death through unprecedented access to search warrant materials and recorded detective interviews with David's family and other Pomona SWAT officers.
