FEDERAL WAY, WA (TCD) — A 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man were arrested in Florida on suspicion of dressing up as Amazon drivers and kidnapping a 7-month-old child from a relative's home.
Marley Ardilla-Urego told a relative, the child's mother, that she had purchased a new bed for the child and that it would be delivered to her home in Federal Way on February 20, according to an affidavit cited by the Seattle Times. Her family moved into the residence about a week before the kidnapping occurred.
On the day of the purported delivery, Ardilla-Urego's partner, Chung Lai, reportedly went to the woman's home disguised as an Amazon employee carrying a clipboard and a box. When the woman opened the door, Rai allegedly punched the woman in the face several times and then bound the woman's ankles and wrists with zip ties. Ardila-Urego reportedly entered her home and restrained the mother while her Rai held the baby. He reportedly put the victim in an Amazon box.
The Seattle Times reported that Rai forced the mother and her 2-year-old child into a bedroom and gagged the woman with the child's clothing.
According to KCPQ-TV, which cited the affidavit, the woman managed to escape the relationship, called 911, and ran outside with her 2-year-old child to find the baby. The woman's father told police and the FBI that because Ardilla-Urego was adamant about knowing the woman's new address, he suspected she was involved in the kidnapping. It is known that the two did not have an intimate relationship until then.
Before the incident, Ardila-Urrego reportedly told her family that she wanted to earn $70,000 by becoming a surrogate mother. She reportedly also mentioned giving birth and selling children.
Police tracked down the couple, who were driving a Honda Insight with Florida license plates and registered to Lai.
According to the Seattle Times, a Washington State Patrol trooper pulled Lai and Ardila-Urrego off the highway about 180 miles from Federal Way. The child was reportedly found inside the car, and officers confirmed the girl's identity by texting a photo to police.
They were arrested on charges of first-degree kidnapping, robbery, assault and theft and are being held on $750,000 bail.
“This case is highly unusual,” Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Phillips wrote in charging documents.
“There is no evidence that mental illness or substance abuse contributed to this crime,” court documents reportedly state.
