“We only have what are called edible straws. This straw – and greens,” After reading the comments from Carnival passengers, I wrote to object to the cruise line’s policy on beverage paraphernalia.
Most cruise lines have completely removed plastic straws from their ships.
With the goal of reducing waste and harmful effects on the environment, some people have replaced plastic tubes with paper or biodegradable straws.
Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Lines, MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Lines have each removed them and instead encouraged cruisers to bring reusable straws.
The idea of adding edible straws to frozen drinks was recently introduced on cruise ships, sparking mixed reactions.
Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald took to his Facebook page to respond to Carnival Jubilee passenger complaints, saying:
“Don’t tell me to buy or bring reusable straws. I wouldn't wash down a straw on a cruise. I use plastic straws at home. I won't feel guilty. —– Explain why the Cruise Lines Company had no problem bringing lots of plastic straws with them every time they had a drink. Do better Carnival.”
While Heald admits he is not an environmentalist, he expressed the cruise company's desire to protect the ocean in its own unique way.
““My car has a V8 engine, but I fly several times a day and I can’t say my underwear isn’t made of kale.” Hild answered.
With more than 300 comments on the Facebook post, cruisers responded mostly positively to the introduction of edible straws on cruise ships.
“Those edible straws were a game changer for me! I didn't know such a place existed until I cruised through Mardi Gras. “My husband brought me a drink without a straw, so I had to make him go back and get one of those delicious straws.” one Facebook user wrote.
Some commenters said they were happy to take reusable or biodegradable straws on their cruises. Heald asked passengers not to bring plastic straws on board. Even though it's technically a banned item and not allowed.
“We know that edible straws are not everyone’s cup of tea. However, you may bring your own straws, stainless steel or reusable, but please do not bring plastic. There are no rules against bringing plastic straws on board, but if possible, try not to bring them. Thank you to the Beards, me and most of all Willie the Whale and his friends.” Heald said:

Other alternatives for cruise passengers include straws made from bamboo, paper, stainless steel and other materials. These reusable straws are also commonly available in gift shops and bars onboard ships.
