Carnival Cruise Line recently stopped many of its passengers from gambling on one of its lido decks. The discovery originated from an online tip received by brand ambassador John Heald.

After tipping off the crew of the Carnival Luminosa, Heald took to Facebook to share what happened. “Yesterday, I heard that the group leader was organizing a card game in the Lido every day that involved quite a lot of money. This was reported to me and as a brand ambassador it was my duty to report this to the ship,” Heald wrote. |
He reiterated that “…gambling outside of casinos is strictly prohibited on our ships.”
Crews aboard the Spirit-class vessel then intervened and prevented the operation from continuing. Afterwards, it was reported that they were playing a dice game called LCR (Left Center Right). Although it is not generally a gambling game, several accounts prove that passengers are exchanging cash.

There was some movement against the crackdown. Some Facebook users claimed that the rule was for profit. Simply put, Carnival wants people to gamble only at the casinos on their ships.
Heald responded by reminding the public that cruise ships must follow various gambling regulations, including the laws of the countries they visit. Onboard casinos are specifically designed to comply with this.

Another online user who claimed to have participated in Luminosa gambling deduced that only small sums of money were involved.
“I am the organizer of this game and no ‘significant sum of money’ is up for grabs. We played for about 90 minutes a day, each playing with five $1 bills. This is pure fun and not gambling. “None of us had any clue that we were doing anything wrong,” she explained. |
The same user described how he was disturbed in his cabin at 9pm and how “humiliated” he felt by security guards. “They called this a ‘very serious problem,’ as if I was smuggling drugs on board.”

Regardless of the amount at stake or the type of game played, gambling is generally understood as any activity where players can lose or win money and other assets. Even gambling cruises limit games of chance to casinos.
It is best to listen to what Heald said at the end of his article. “Gambling using dice or cards for money organized by the group leader is not permitted. It’s really, really simple.”
