A Belarusian court has sentenced members of the anti-establishment rock band Nizkiz to two years in prison for “organizing and conspiring to commit acts that seriously violate public order.” Mass protests erupted after President Aleksandr Lukashenko was elected to a sixth term in controversial 2020 elections. Nizkiz released the song “Rules”, which became a protest anthem, and filmed a music video for the song at one of the protest sites. The government also placed the band on an official extremist list, effectively banning its music and subjecting its fans to prosecution.
