Bota Systems AG today launched PixONE, a sensor that combines high-performance electronics in a compact and lightweight design. Founded in 2020 as a spin-off of ETH Zurch, the company specializes in multi-axis force-torque sensors.
Zurich-based Bota said it designed its latest sensors for “seamless integration with robotic systems.” PixONE features a through-hole architecture that facilitates internal cable routing, improving robot agility and safety, the company said.
The sensor's hollow shaft design allows users to more easily connect the robot's arm and arm end tool (EOT or EOAT) while maintaining the integrity of internal cable routing, Bota Systems said. This design could be especially helpful, he adds, as many robotic arm manufacturers are turning to internal routing to eliminate cable tangles and movement restrictions.
“Our goal is to give robots a sense of touch, making them safer and more user-friendly, as well as improving their collaborative capabilities,” said Klajd Lika, co-founder and CEO of Bota Systems. “PixONE is an OEM-ready advanced sensing solution that allows robot developers and integrators to easily enhance any robot under development with minimal integration effort.”
PixONE minimalist design is lightweight.
PixONE features a minimal, two-piece design. Bota Systems says this simplifies assembly and significantly reduces the weight of the sensor, making it 30% lighter than similar sensors on the market. This is important for dynamic systems, such as fast-moving robots, where excessive weight can reduce performance and operational efficiency, he said.
Bota Systems offers a variety of models of the PixONE, starting with an outside diameter of 60 mm (2.36 inches) and through hole diameters of 15 mm (0.59 inches). The sensor contains an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and has an IP67 water resistance rating. The company said these features make it suitable for a wide range of operating environments.
“PixONE offers a higher torque-to-force ratio than comparable sensors with integrated electronics, giving integrators more freedom in EOT design, especially with larger tools,” said Ilias Patsiaouras, co-founder and chief technology officer of Bota Systems. “You can enjoy it,” he said. “PixONE improves sensor integration by providing internal connectivity and cable pass-through, making it ideal for a wide range of robotic applications from industrial to medical.”
PixONE configurations can support payloads of up to 250 kg (551 pounds). Bota said it maintained a uniform interface across all models to facilitate rapid integration.
PixONE's design also improves system reliability by minimizing the number of external connections and components, according to the company. PixONE uses EtherCAT technology for high-speed data communication and supports Power over Ethernet (PoE).
Meet Bota Systems at Robotics Summit & Expo
Bota Systems is the official distribution and integration partner of Universal Robots and Mecademic. In October 2023, we added NEXT Robotics to our distributor network.
That same month, Bota Systems raised $2.5 million in seed funding. The company said it plans to use the funds to grow its team to meet growing demand from leading research labs and manufacturing companies. We also plan to accelerate our product roadmap.
