A pro-Palestinian graduate of McGill University made a “spitting motion” at two faculty members, including the school's president, while receiving his diploma last week.
The unidentified student also unfurled a banner that read ‘Escape from Death.’
According to gadget, The official McGill video of the event does not show any students making a spitting motion (it is unclear if they actually spit) or holding a banner. But the unedited version (Under) It started spreading on social media.
“We were so focused on the event itself that we did not notice that the graduating student was spitting,” McGill said in a statement.
But, “It was like that. […] Apparently the student was yelling and being very rude. “The University remains firmly committed to peaceful and respectful dialogue on even the most divisive and painful issues.”
Citing privacy concerns, McGill declined to say whether students would be disciplined, but did note that action would be taken if the student code of conduct or the law was “violated.”

McGill moved its commencement ceremony off campus this year because of the anti-Israel encampment on school grounds for nearly two months. Yesterday, 15 pro-Hamas activists were arrested on charges of occupying the administrative building starting the afternoon of the previous day.
Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante said on social media, “Protest is a fundamental right, but it cannot justify violence and the illegal occupation of McGill land.”
According to gadget, The activists said they had “blocked several gates,” “damaged the exterior and parts of the interior,” and “shouted threats,” including “Use violence now.”
A spokesperson for the Palestine Coalition for Human Rights, who is also a McGill student, said activists occupied the building because McGill officials did not agree to activists' demands, such as a “rest”.[ing] We have financial and academic ties with Israel.”
