Serbian aviation and ground handling specialist Menzies Aviation have finalized an agreement for their joint venture, Menzies Aviation Beograd, which will provide passenger and aircraft ground handling services to the Serbian national airline at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. The deal has been agreed but must now receive competitive and regulatory approvals. A joint venture is a combination of two or more parties who pursue the development of a single enterprise or project for profit and share the risks associated with development. However, a venture is its own entity, separate from the other business interests of its participants. Air Serbia has expressed interest in forming joint ventures with other companies in the past, including Turkish Airlines, for potential maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities.
Commenting on the development, Air Serbia said: “The signing of this agreement marks the next step in the previously established cooperation between Air Serbia and Menzies Airlines, in which they signed a memorandum of understanding in October 2023.” This confirmed the intention of both sides to launch a joint airline. “This is a venture that supports the growth of Serbia’s national airline and the improvement of the overall service it offers to its passengers.” Menzies took over ground handling duties on behalf of Air Serbia on 5 March. The company provides ramp handling, baggage, deicing and passenger services to airlines. It also provides low mobility services to passengers and air cargo services.
Philipp Joeinig, CEO of Menzies Aviation, previously said: “We are very excited about the opportunity to work with Air Serbia and help the airline achieve growth both domestically and internationally. Strategically, as a world-leading service provider and a leading provider in the region, this venture represents a major step for Menzies and supports our ambitions to expand our presence in the Balkans and support emerging aviation markets. With our fast-growing Air Serbia, we look forward to providing market-leading, high-quality air services in the Balkans and growing our market share at Belgrade Airport.” Menzies is expanding further in the region following this month's acquisition of Flystar Flight Support, a ground handling provider specializing in business aviation based in Podgorica, which has subsidiaries in Serbia, Croatia and Albania and a dispatch center in Belgrade.
