How much does an exoskeleton cost?
We spoke with Dr. Hao Xu, an associate professor at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also serves as director of the Biomechatronics and Intelligent Robotics Laboratory. (by rain)He said, “While exoskeletons cost between $50,000 and $120,000 due to R&D costs and actuator costs, our approach can significantly reduce R&D costs by leveraging an efficient simulation learning framework that allows rapid design and testing in computer simulations rather than extensive testing on humans and physical robots.
“Going forward, we plan to make robots truly affordable and accessible through innovative hardware designs: low-ratio gears and cost-effective, yet high-torque electric motors. In about a year, we plan to have an exoskeleton that will retail for between $1,500 and $4,000, depending on the specific features and manufacturing scale.”
