The number of single Americans this Valentine's Day is at record levels. In 2020 and 2021, marriage rates hit their lowest levels since the government began tracking them in 1867, a trend that was underway even before the pandemic. An unprecedented 25% of people in their 40s have never been married, according to a study by the Pew Research Center. Single people are much less likely to be living with a romantic partner than they were in 1990.
