Our journey as new homeowners was more than just finding a place to live. It was about finally creating a space that resonated with our personalities and accommodated our growing, active family. Like any millennial mom who loves HGTV, the urge to renovate and decorate began right after closing. Now that we’ve completed our renovation, we’ve realized that the foundation of our decorating journey needs to start with one essential element: the rug.
As a mom navigating life with two energetic toddlers and a playful Bernudl puppy, a washable rug was a non-negotiable priority. The constant battle with pet hair, spills, and the inevitable toddler accidents drove us to find a rug that would not only add a splash of color to our neutral spaces, but also provide the durability and functionality needed for a vibrant home.
We were drawn to Ruggable’s easy-cleaning, versatile designs, and unique pad system, so we decided to put them to the test. Specifically, we sampled the Celestine Coral 6×9′ rug with a standard plain-weave base ($339), the Alessia Dusk Blue 8′ tufted rug with a cushioned base ($659), and the Jolie Blue Quartz tufted 6×9′ rug with a cushioned pad ($579). Here’s my honest review. (Bonus: The company is currently having a birthday sale, promising 20% off sitewide through July 7th with code BDAY24.)
Ease of cleaning: Easy to maintain
Ruggable really lives up to its promise of easy cleaning. Since we got the rug, it has withstood spills, dirt, and even the unexpected accidents of our potty-training toddler. Most spills are easy to spot and clean up, but the more difficult ones have required a trip to the washing machine.
It feels like a thick, thick blanket, but the rug is flexible enough to fit in a standard washing machine. Following Ruggable’s washing instructions, we washed it in cold water on the delicate cycle, with the design side facing out. You can tumble dry it on low, but I decided to air dry it on the ledge. It took a while, but I was happy to find that it dried completely flat, with no lumps or curled edges, and yes, it was clean.
Rigid Pad Systems: Tufted vs. Flatwoven
This rug comes in two separate pieces, the rug pad and cover, so it’s machine washable. You can choose between two types of rug pads (standard and cushioned) and two types of covers (tufted or standard). This flexibility allows you to mix and match pad and cover combinations to perfectly fit your space. For our family of four, we needed three different combinations to balance comfort and traffic.
- Tufting cover + cushion pad It's 3x thicker, making it easier on your knees and creating a cozy play space, making it perfect for a child's playroom.
- Plain weave + standard pad A functional choice for the office, it offers a low height perfect for moving furniture without sacrificing comfort.
- Plain weave + cushion pad Chosen for formal living rooms, it strikes the perfect balance of comfort and durability even in spaces with limited foot traffic.
It is important to note that only the cover is washable. It attaches to the pad via very strong Velcro. It was not difficult to remove from the pad, but the strong grip of the Velcro made it difficult to align the pad and cover perfectly. It took two people and a bit of adjusting to fit a larger rug.
Rugged Durability: Built to Last
We were skeptical about the durability of the rug, given its occasional washing and heavy foot traffic. However, even after only a short period of use, we have been pleasantly surprised by its resilience. There are no signs of wear, such as clumping, fading, or curled edges, which gives us more confidence in its long-term durability.
What we liked most was the non-slip backing of the pad, which makes it safe to place in high-traffic areas. No need for sticky rug grippers to ruin your new floor. Plus, we were impressed with how firmly the rug stayed attached to the pad, even after a wash cycle.
Style: Where Form Meets Function
Ruggable strikes the perfect balance between practicality and style, ensuring that you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. They have a wide range of designs, from trendy modern to timeless classics. Collaborations with Kathy and Nicky Hilton, BridgertonFeaturing the late fashion icon Iris Apple, Barbie, designer Jonathan Adler and Disney, we've got a wide selection to suit a variety of spaces and decor styles.
Plus, now that you have a pad, the option to change the cover adds convenience, allowing you to refresh your space or adapt to changing decor trends without having to invest in a completely new rug.
In conclusion, Ruggable really impressed us in every way. Not only is this rug functional, but it’s also a statement piece that elevates our home while simplifying maintenance. Washable rugs make parenting a little easier, as spills and accidents are no longer a problem. For those looking for a rug that effortlessly combines practicality and style, Ruggable stands out as the ultimate choice, delivering on its promise and more.
