BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (TCN) — A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing his ex-girlfriend's teenage daughter and injuring her son last week.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, officers responded to the Park Place Apartments shortly after 12 p.m. on June 19 and found a 15-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Firefighters pronounced the girl, later identified by police as Cornelia Lathan, dead. The boy was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police allege Otis Montgomery III shot the victims during a domestic disturbance. He is known to be the ex-boyfriend of the victim's mother. The mother is pregnant and was taken to the hospital for observation, according to AL.com.
Further investigation revealed that Montgomery was standing in the apartment complex parking lot when the shooting occurred. Witnesses told authorities they heard multiple gunshots and Montgomery left the area on foot.
Police found Montgomery within an hour of the shooting. He was charged with capital murder, attempted murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. Montgomery is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bail.
Police Chief Scott Thurmond told AL.com officers were called to the apartment earlier in the day for a verbal disturbance inside the home and have also responded to the home for domestic calls in the past.
