President Biden announced major steps to secure our borders while making our immigration system fairer.
Biden announces new measures to help keep families together
According to the White House fact sheet, the administration plans to take the following actions:
• Today, President Biden announced that the Department of Homeland Security will take action to ensure that American citizens with non-citizen spouses and children can keep their families together.
• This new process will help certain non-citizen spouses and children apply for lawful permanent residency for which they are already eligible without leaving the country.
• These actions will provide significant benefits to the nation by promoting family unity and strengthening the economy and will help U.S. citizen and noncitizen families stay together.
• To be eligible, a non-citizen must have resided in the United States for at least 10 years as of June 17, 2024, be legally married to a U.S. citizen, and meet all applicable legal requirements. On average, people eligible for this procedure have lived in the United States for 23 years.
• After DHS evaluates applications on a case-by-case basis, those who are approved are given three years to apply for permanent residency. They can stay with their families in the U.S. and obtain work permits for up to three years. This applies to all eligible married couples.
• This measure would protect approximately 500,000 spouses of U.S. citizens and approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under age 21 whose parents are married to U.S. citizens.
Easing visa procedures for U.S. college graduates, including Dreamers
• President Obama and then-Vice President Biden established the DACA policy to ensure that young people brought here as children can come out of the shadows and contribute to our country in meaningful ways. Twelve years later, DACA recipients who started out as high school and college students are now building successful careers and raising families of their own.
Today's announcement allows individuals, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers, to obtain a degree from an accredited U.S. higher education institution in the United States and receive a job offer from a U.S. employer. Choose a field related to your degree to get your work visa faster.
• Recognizing that it is in the national interest to ensure that U.S.-educated individuals utilize their skills and education to benefit our country, the Administration is taking steps to expedite the work visa process for graduates . After graduating from college, I received offers for highly skilled jobs, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers.
Biden Commits to Make Immigration System Fairer and Fairer
Presidential adviser Blas Nuñez-Neto explained to PoliticusUSA on a call with reporters that President Biden's goal is to secure the border and keep families together.
The Department of Homeland Security will take steps designed to help citizens with noncitizen spouses and children keep their families together. This new process will help certain non-citizen spouses and children apply for lawful permanent resident status for which they already qualify, without leaving the country and potentially putting themselves at risk. The measure would protect about 500,000 American families and about 50,000 noncitizen children under 21 whose parents are married to U.S. citizens. President Biden will also announce that his administration is taking steps to expedite the work visa process for college graduates and highly skilled jobs, including DACA recipients and other DREAMERS.
These actions demonstrate that the Administration is committed to taking action within our legal authorities to protect our borders and ensure our immigration system is fairer and more equitable. But we know that only Congress can provide the additional staffing resources and policy changes needed to secure our borders, and only Congress can secure our borders and provide the comprehensive reforms to immigration and asylum laws needed to secure our borders. We clearly recognize that it is possible. Working with the immigration system.
Biden recognizes the importance of legal immigration
The difference between Biden and Trump on immigration is that Biden wants to fix a broken system, while Trump's solution is to eliminate all immigration. Mass deportations would be devastating to the American economy. There is no reason for families to separate other than cruelty.
Biden continues to work to build an immigration system that benefits the economy and is fair for everyone. Trump fails to recognize the importance of immigrants to the American economy.
President Biden puts family first. Because his convicted opponent is only telling people what they want to hear.
