Following reports that the Notes app would get new math-based features, AppleInsider reports that the Calculator app will be getting a major overhaul in macOS 15. Apple is expected to pull from macOS 15 at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2024 in June.
Here are the changes to macOS Calculator:
- A similar redesign to the iOS Calculator app. The macOS Calculator app has a similar layout and color scheme to the iOS Calculator, but the iPhone app has round buttons compared to the Mac's square buttons.
- An adjustable window size that replaces the current fixed size. You can choose between Basic, Scientific, and Programmer views from the menu bar, but the Mac Calculator app doesn't support resizing by dragging the corners of the window.
- It is said to be a history tape displaying past calculations, displayed as a sidebar with functions toggled via buttons.
- A more intuitive interface for unit conversion.
- The macOS 15 Notes app supports new Math Notes features.
The calculator app hasn't received much attention from Apple. Although macOS Yosemite has received a facelift, its features have not changed significantly. Users typically use third-party apps like PCalc ($9.99) or Soulver ($34.95). Apple is expected to introduce AI features in macOS 15, and it looks like the Calculator app could be one area that could see an AI-based upgrade.
