Edgar Burcksen, a longtime feature, documentary and TV series editor, died Sunday in Los Angeles from complications of a heart attack. He was 76 years old.
Burcksen won an Emmy and an ACE Robert Wise Award for editing the pilot of “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.” He also won the Golden Calf Award at the Netherlands Film Festival.
Born in the Netherlands, Burcksen began his editing career in Amsterdam. After moving to the United States, he worked as an editor for the animation 'Seabert.' He then joined Industrial Light and Magic, where he worked as an effects editor for “Die Hard 2” and “The Hunt for Red October.” George Lucas chose him to consult on EditDroid, Avid's predecessor.
His work includes Jeroen Krabbe's Golden Bear-nominated feature “Left Luggage” and the Oscar-nominated documentaries “Colors Straight Up,” “Darfur Now,” “Hollywood Banker” and Kevin Costner's “500 Nations.” .”
His last editing credit was on Ate de Jong's next film, “Heart Strings.” Diversity Steve Gaydos, Vice President of Content.
Burcksen is a former executive director of America Cinema Editors and a longtime writer and editor-in-chief of Cinema Editor Magazine. He also taught advanced film editing at the University of San Francisco's Academy of Arts.
An ultramarathon cyclist, he has completed 25 double centuries.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jana, and their two children.
