LA PAZ COUNTY, AZ (TCD) — A 27-year-old woman who went missing a month ago was found naked and dead under a tree about a mile from where her car was abandoned.
Amanda Nenigar was last seen on February 28, 2024 in Blythe, California near the Arizona border. According to the Los Angeles Times, Nenigar left the Blythe hotel at 3:44 a.m. on February 27, and about three hours later she contacted police, saying she had gotten lost in her car heading to Palm Springs.
In a 911 call, she reportedly stated, “I think I fell asleep in the driver's seat. I was tired, so I went to stop the car, but I think it ran off the road.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, Nennigar stayed on the phone with 911 dispatchers for nearly an hour trying to find out where she was. She reportedly gave her coordinates to her detachment, but they are still having trouble locating her. She said that at one point she was running away from people who were trying to kill her.
Nenigar's mother told the Los Angeles Times that Nenigar was dealing with mental health and drug issues and was “trying to overcome them.”
“I think that’s where I ended up, because when you’re in withdrawal or when you’re detoxing your body, your mind goes into psychosis,” she said.
The La Paz County Sheriff's Office in Arizona announced on March 12 that Nennigar's car was located in a remote area, but officials were continuing to search for her. She was found dead on Friday, March 29th.
Investigators reported that Nenigar took off his clothes to cool off but died from exposure to the cold weather, KPHO-TV reported. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause and circumstances of death.
“Time is of the essence if we're going to find anyone alive. Unfortunately, we've come to this situation. We're trying to bounce back information that's not coming fast enough,” La Paz County Sheriff William Ponce told KHPO. . “If we had found out much sooner, we would have been able to locate her alive and bring her home.”
