Google's latest travel update powers travel planning with AI, providing itinerary creation and insights into consumer intent in the travel market.
Ahead of the summer holiday season, Google is unveiling a series of travel updates that solidify its position as a key player in travel planning and increase its understanding of consumer purchase intent within the travel domain. Among these updates is the introduction of Google's new AI tool for planning trips around the world, Itinerary, a cutting-edge feature designed to transform the way users plan their trips.
Google is powering its Search Generated Experience (SGE) to help you create itineraries and generate travel ideas with AI, a development the company shared Wednesday.
The Headlines feature introduces enhancements to Google's Search Generated Experience (SGE) that aims to enable users to create detailed travel itineraries and brainstorm travel ideas with the help of AI.
This newly introduced feature is currently only accessible to English-speaking users in the United States as part of Search Labs, Google's platform for testing early versions of search features and gathering user feedback, leveraging insights collected from a variety of online sources. It contains user reviews, images and comprehensive details provided to us about destinations around the world.
For example, if you make a request like “Plan a 3-day historical tour of Philadelphia for me,” you’ll see suggested itineraries. This itinerary showcases a variety of historical attractions and dining options, and complements a summary of flight and hotel alternatives for different times of the day.
At this stage the itinerary is for planning purposes only and no direct booking options are available. Once satisfied with the planned itinerary, users can export the itinerary to Gmail, Docs, or Maps.
Google has yet to reveal broader rollout plans, but the plans highlight exploring the potential applications of AI technology in a variety of sectors, including travel. The emergence of generative AI in travel services is being closely watched with mixed reactions from the industry. Meanwhile, startups such as Mindtrip and Layla are taking the lead using AI-based travel planning assistants.
With this update, Google is not only joining the ranks of these innovators, but also strengthening its data collection on consumer interests related to travel. This is invaluable information for the advertising sector and understanding user demand for these innovations.
Google is also simplifying the process of finding featured listings on Google Maps for select U.S. and Canadian cities. Users can now access recommendations from publishers like The Infatuation and other community members when they search for a city on the map. Maps also now displays a curated list of the best places to eat, including trendy and off-the-beaten-track restaurants, in more than 40 U.S. cities.
To help you personalize your travel plans, Google is introducing a tool that allows users to customize their lists to organize locations according to their preferences or in an order that fits their travel itinerary. You can also now enrich these lists with links to content from your social media channels, making it easier to share your discoveries with others.
