Netflix's highly anticipated sci-fi epic The Three Body Problem premiered tonight at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
Based on Cixin Liu's trilogy, the streaming show is brought to life by Game of Thrones creators Dan Benioff and Dan Weiss and follows the story of a group of brilliant scientists who make surprising discoveries while witnessing the laws of science unravel. The show premieres on Netflix on March 21st.
The Three-Body Problem records Earth's contact with an extraterrestrial civilization from a very different kind of solar system. In physics, the three-body problem refers to the motion of three-point mass particles due to gravitational effects. It's like the gravitational forces of the Sun, Earth, and Moon happening simultaneously.
The three-body problem is incredibly difficult to grasp, but it's rooted in science and physics in a way that most novels never delve into detail. In 2020, Netflix announced that Game of Thrones streaming show writers David Benioff and DB Weiss would adapt the trilogy into a science fiction TV drama. This makes it the rare non-English book to be adapted by a streaming service.

I met them at CES 2024 in Las Vegas last January and asked if the unofficial fourth book, 'Salvation of Time', written by Fan Baoshu, would be included in the series. They said the scope of the contract only applies to books written by Liu Cixin.
The show stars Liam Cunningham, John Bradley, Jonathan Pryce, Benedict Wong, Tsai Chin, Eiza Gonzalez, Alex Sharp, Saamer Usmani, Jovan Adepo, Sea Shimooka and Rosalind Chao.
Committed to building partnerships with prominent global companies to foster unique experiences, Three Body Universe partnered with Netflix to bring its stories to Western audiences. This collaboration marks an important moment for the growth of the Chinese entertainment industry in North America and EMEA.
Cedric Zhao, CEO of Three Body Universe, an international intellectual property creator and manager, said the Netflix series is his first project since becoming the owner of the intellectual property. Zhao offered us an exclusive quote.
“Three Body IP has captivated audiences around the world by providing a new perspective to see and understand Eastern approaches to solving global problems,” said Zhao. “We are thrilled to see the story brought to life in a new medium and demonstrating its enduring appeal. The endless global interest in the ‘Three-Body Problem’ shows that the questions it raises about our reality are timeless and universal.”
Zhao added: “Science fiction resonates with people around the world because it gets to the heart of people’s greatest fears and hopes for the future. We understood that about the novel from the beginning, and it gave us confidence that the story could accommodate different formats and different storytelling perspectives. We were very excited to see it come to fruition.”
