Washington (TCD) — A 15-year-old male was detained for months last week on suspicion of fatally shooting a rideshare driver who previously served as an interpreter for U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan.
Nasrat Ahmad Yar, 31, was found shot. was in his vehicle shortly after midnight on Monday, July 3, 2023. Washington police arrived on the scene in the 400 block of 11th Street Northeast and transported Yar to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
On Friday, March 1, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department announced that the U.S. Marshals Service Metropolitan Area Fugitive Task Force had taken a teenager into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder while armed.
Days after the shooting, police released surveillance video showing four boys running in an alley near the scene. Deputy Chief of Investigations Leslie Parsons said at a news conference that videos and tips from the public “played an important role in solving this case.”
According to Parsons, Ahmad Yar was sitting in his car after dropping off a passenger when he was approached by “several young suspects.” Investigators believe the suspects may have attempted to carjack Ahmad Yar, and during the incident, one of the suspects fired a gun.
Police are continuing their search for other suspects.
The Associated Press reported Ahmad Yar worked as an interpreter for U.S. Special Forces in his native Afghanistan for about 10 years. Ahmad Yar and his family moved to the United States following the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in 2021. They first moved to Pennsylvania, but reportedly did not feel safe there, so they moved to Alexandria, Virginia.
“The reckless actions of these teenagers took the life of a man and tore apart a family just beginning their journey in this country,” Parsons said.
