Stephen Colbert accused the media of treating Trump's crimes like a standard political story, part of election horse race coverage.
Colbert said:
Those three things are today and tomorrow. He also faces a Jan. 6 trial in Washington, D.C., a confidential documents case in Florida, Colorado that seeks to get him off the ballot on insurrection charges, and an appeal of his verdict in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case, which a jury has already decided. It was revealed that Trump committed sexual assault. And yet people want to hire this lunatic as president.
Taking all of this into consideration, I would like to make a brief public service announcement. [f-ed] consolation. I know we have become desensitized to it. And it's not normal. No other presidential candidate has ever taken his own life in multiple court cases. And I want to point out that in all seven of his cases, no one doubts that he did this. We can only wait patiently to see if the wheels of justice will move quickly enough to produce any results.

And the media is covering this case like any other political story. It's all about horse racing. But in this horse race, one horse is old, and the other horse is old and has a hoof disease, so he keeps quoting Hitler!

Stephen Colbert was right. One of the reasons election coverage has been so disappointing is because the media continues to minimize or ignore Trump's criminal trial as part of the campaign. It's as if the media has decided that criminal trials are just another aspect of the election.
When it is the opposite of normal. The United States has never had a former president plan to return to the White House while facing 91 felony charges. None of this is normal and should not be treated normally.
The media is undermining democracy and the country. Trump's alleged crimes are out of the ordinary and the media needs to stop treating him like any other candidate.
