HIGHLAND PARK, IL (TCD) — Two men in their 60s were found shot to death outside a suburban Chicago home that caught fire just days after their mother died.
At 3:50 a.m. on June 5, the Highland Park Fire and Police Departments responded to reports of a fire on a rooftop in the 1700 block of Park Avenue, according to the statement. Multiple fire trucks arrived, and first responders reportedly noted “severe fire conditions.”
An officer from Tower Ladder 33 surveyed a 360-degree view of the house as another truck began putting out the fire. During the search, two dead victims were found. Other firefighters also entered the home to search for other victims, but were unable to find any.
WGN-TV reported that the victims were identified as 63-year-old Marc Austwick and 60-year-old John Austwick. The Lake County Medical Examiner reportedly determined that the men died from gunshot wounds.
Their mother, Phyllis Austwick, died on May 31 at the age of 84. WGN reported that a memorial for her was scheduled to be erected on Sunday, June 8.
